FLAMEOUT 5111/5112

[Product Image]FLAMEOUT FOR FABRIC - INDUSTRY INTRODUCTION

The furniture, upholstery, and lodging industries manage the comfort, style and basic safety of our interior environment every day. Fire safety, however, was left to the firemen who had to fight a tragedy. Of course, sprinklers, hoses and standpipes were part of the answer. Unfortunately, sprinklers don't always work consistently, and hoses and standpipes aren't always conveniently located. Only 10 - 15% of the damage in a successfully extinguished fire is caused by the fire itself. The major damage is from the very water used to put it out. So it's easy to see how the cost to repair this damage can be very expensive when these systems react.

Until fairly recently even the building contents were only tested to insure that they could not be ignited by a lit cigarette. Upholstery, furniture and drapes in high rise buildings, hotels and motels, and commercial structures were not required to be resistant to open flame. It appears, however, that the winds of public policy are changing this picture with unanticipated speed and momentum.

In the early 1980's, the state of California was virtually alone in providing stricter standards for public assemblies, and high-risk high occupancy facilities. Their Bureau of Home Furnishings Technical Bulletins 121, and 133 were developed to subject to open flame, furniture and bedding previously only tested against the lower cigarette standard.

Additionally, strict fire standard enforcement was often hampered by the high cost of sometimes expensive, yet poorly performing products. Even so, by 1986, California was one of six states to enact these stricter standards for voluntary compliance. More and more states are expressing the intention to accept stronger regulations. Moreover, by September, 1989, the open flame test will be the mandatory California standard, with additional states expected to follow.

The use of fabric protectants is gaining in popularity world wide. Soon their use will be the standard. The addition of Stain Stop to FlameOut for Fabric/5112 makes a strong combination of fire and stain protection for fabrics, and brings a new standard of performance to industry. No longer will we strive to beautify without concern for fire safety. This new technology means that fire safety no longer can be considered an extra cost luxury. It must be seen as the public's right.

Fire resistive and fire retardant compounds are not new, but now FlameOut for Fabric offers the highest quality at affordable prices. This availability of products opens the way for cost-effective compliance throughout the industries. Their unique qualities make them major additions to the fight for fire safety.

HOTEL, MOTEL & HIGH RISE BUILDING

INTERIOR APPLICATIONS

PRODUCTS:

APPLICATION METHODS:

APPLICATION EXAMPLES:

In a hotel room, the bedding and mattress, draperies and furniture comprise over 95% of the major fire fuel in the room. It, then is no wonder that the spread of fire in this environment can take such a heavy toll. This is true to a lesser extent in high-rise office buildings where the fire fuel picture is complicated by the danger added by volumes of paper.

Using FlameOut to help fire safe rooms in hotels and motels, and to protect common areas in hotel, motel and high-rise buildings provides preventive protection in advance of danger. Upholstered furniture, drapes, and bedding materials treated with FlameOut for Fabric/5111/5112 will not support flame. FlameOut for Fabric/5111/5112 protect by starving fire of the fuel it needs to survive.

And now, with the addition of Stain Stop protection to the fabric fire retardancy of FlameOut, public safety will be increased, property beauty will be maintained, and the life and value of the hotel or high-rise's property investment will be increased. This stain and soil protection retains its properties even after multiple solvent cleanings and vacuuming.

The incidence of fire tragedies such as the Union Bank and the First Interstate Bank buildings in Los Angeles, the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, the Maryland Hotel in San Diego, the Dupont Plaza Hotel fire in Puerto Rico, Manilla (Phillipines), and others can be significantly reduced. New and impending regulations on upholstered furniture and bedding materials make it critical for hotel and motel owners and operators as well as high-rise building owners and operators to start a planned replacement program for those at-risk items before the new laws take effect.

RESIDENTIAL APPLICATIONS

APPLICATION METHODS:

APPLICATION EXAMPLES:

Using FlameOut to help prevent the loss of residential belongings provides protection in advance of danger. FlameOut for Fabric/5112 protects interior fabrics by treating the fibers of the fabric surface to starve fire by denying it the fuel it needs to survive. In this way, neither heat transfer from nearby burning materials nor non-flaming debris will not allow a treated surface to ignite and support flame on its own.

Along with the superior fire retardant qualities, the excellent soil resistance of FlameOut 5112 provides for quick and easy clean up of spills and stains.

FlameOut/5112 is colorless, non-toxic, environmentally safe, and has a pleasant fresh scent. With these superior products, the property owner can treat (or have treated) most of the natural and/or synthetic fabrics found in the home.

BEDDING & MATTRESS INDUSTRY
INFORMATION

FOAM BASED BEDDING SYSTEMS & UPHOLSTERY

A mattress constitutes sixty (60) percent of the fire fuel in a room. Statistics show that the majority of fires that start in a bedroom, are started by a cigarette left smoldering on a mattress, or tossed carelessly into wastebasket, thereby gradually creating combustion and an ensuing disaster. Because of this, a proven means of insuring that fire cannot start nor spread from a mattress to other combustible materials is vital to the safety of all consumers. Now, a new fire retardant chemical has been developed to treat foam products, rendering them non-combustible.

TICKING:
When the ticking goes to the manufacturer, it is delivered after having been treated with sizing (to give it body, and make it feel substantial), and a stain repellent (but often no flame retardant). Both additives block absorbency. However, both are gone after the first laundering or solvent cleaning. Once they are gone, absorbency goes up.

Developments in recent years have seen the rise of availability of ticking which meets basic flammability standards. With, however, exposure of the untreated (or undertreated) interior, the fire safety problem remains.

Additionally, FlameOut for Fabric/5112 treatment (during manufacture or as a post-treatment) provides both the flame retardancy and stain blocking capacity needed to insure the safety, as well as superior soil and stain protection.

ENDUROLATOR PADDING:
This thin layer of padding in between the foam layers, contributes to the life and comfort of the mattress. Made of scrap fibers, this padding is easily treated by FlameOut products to add an extra measure of fire protection.
